Today, we celebrated International Women’s Day (IWD)! We started our pickets bright and early like every day, with thoughts of solidarity for the women of Yarl’s Wood still on hunger strike.
We organised a new, flying picket as well, to show the less-often picketed departments that we’re still here!
A bit before 11, we all joined in on the main entrance picket to start the beginning of our daily campus march, with lots and lots of protest signs. VC Paul Boyle’s pick for new Chancellor of our university got some attention.
Our daily march had a slight twist to it: as you’re probably aware, only one building is named after a woman on campus (the Danielle Brown Sports Centre).
Well… That was a quick fix!
This is our new campus map. (Clicking on the names should take you to a page with more information about the amazing women we’ve renamed our buildings for.)
And finally, we renamed the Fielding Johnson Building (which houses the ‘corridor of power’) after all the unsung – and invisibilised – female heroes of the world.
We remained in front of the building for a bit and had ourselves a carnival in honour of IWD.
…how very riotgrrrl!
