On Monday morning students began an occupation of the Fielding Johnson Building, the University of Leicester’s main administration building at the centre of campus, in solidarity with striking university staff and in protest at the proposed appointment of David Willetts as Chancellor.
Leicester UCU would like to extend a message of gratitude and reciprocal solidarity to the occupiers. It is clear that there is a growing awareness amongst both students and staff that the university governance and funding machine that is attacking university workers’ pensions is the same regime that charges students exorbitant tuition fees likely to result in debt upon graduation of more than £50,000.
Our members, the students, and other workers (from estates, to security, to catering staff) are all in the same boat here. The torrent of unthinking and self-serving decisions made by the government, Universities UK, and our own VC Paul Boyle has exposed this public secret once and for all.
